Over the weekend I had to change the ip address of my virtual center server. This ordinarily would have been no big deal. But I have found that the vpxagent's that reside on the virtual hosts seem to use the IP address of the Virtual Center server rather than the DNS name. Read on for more.

So apart from changing DNS and updating the hosts files if they exist, the vpx agents need to be reconfigured. After I changed the IP on the virtualcenter server and connected to it, virtualcenter displayed some weird behaviour. Initially it looked as if everything was working correctly then after a minute or two, virtualcenter hung and all of the hosts appeared "greyed out". They all stated that they were not responding.

There were a couple of options to resolve this problem, the first would be a manual reconfiguration of the vpx agent on each host but that seemed like a big hassle. So I went with the easiest option which was to disconnect each host in virtualcenter and reconnect. At this point you get a prompt telling you that the host is currently managed by "insert.old.ip.here" and asking if you want to continue. I pushed past that point, reconnected the host and bingo everything was ok.
