VIRTUALISATION, THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
The trend of “Virtualisation” is one of the most
significant strategic trends within the IT industry. All Information
Management (IM) professional will need to be aware of this trend and
what it means to the IT environment in which they operate. They need to
ensure they understand what virtualisation is (and isn’t) so they are
not confused about the impact that it will have own the environment.
Not only do ICT/IM Professionals need to understand what changes to
make; also they will need to know the difference between the correct
changes and the sales pitch. Data will be transitioned to new
environments leading to migration questions. Physical servers will be
removed and replace with virtual servers; INFORMATION WILL BE STORED
AND MANAGED IN DIFFERENT WAYS. All of these will impact on Information
Management as disaster recovery and business continuity come heavily
under the microscope.
However, this is just the beginning! Over the
next 7 years the typical commodity IT infrastructure will be
‘reinvented’ from today’s network of independent servers and storage
into a unified computing resource that looks and behaves remarkably
like the old mainframe. This new infrastructure will blend the best
attributes from each architecture to create a highly agile, robust and
cost effective environment that is based on commodity components. While
the key technologies are available today, due to the inertia of the
existing environment, and the cultural barriers in IT and the business,
this journey will take most organisations 5-7 years to complete. The
key component in this new infrastructure stack is server
virtualisation, which becomes the data centre operating system.
If you are a CIO, ICT Manager or Information
Manager concerned about the impact on your organisation of
virtualisation then the IIM August event is a must.
