If you upgrade your virtual machines from ESX 2.x to ESX 3.x you need to upgrade the vmware tools. Unless your VMware tools were 2.5.3 or higher the upgrade will fail and ask for the VMware tools installation cd. There are two options to resolve this, read on for more.
The first option is to upgrade to 2.5.3 or higher, then upgrading to version 3. To upgrade to 2.5.3 or higher , copy the ISO of ESX server to a location readable by the host. The mount the iso in the virtual machine and you should be able to install the VMware tools. Give the virtual machine a reboot and then install the version 3 tools the normal way. The second option is to go through the registry of the virtual machine and search for "vmware tools". This way is not so clean, but quicker and easier. When you find entries under Hkey Local Machine that reference to VMware tools you may delete them. Specifially the ones under "installer". This will take out the installer entry for the virtual machine and you should be able to install the version 3 tools. Please be careful when working with the registry on the virtual machines. The upgrading tools option is a safer option. |
