Install ESX server on Workstation 6
Written by Damian Murdoch

http://www.xtravirt.com has done it again, Gavin Joliffe emailed me tonight to let me know that the new whitepaper on installing ESX server on Workstation 6 has been released. Think about this one, now you can take your demonstration lab of multiple ESX servers with you on your laptop. You can now demonstrate ESX servers and vmotion all on your laptop! You now do not need to buy HCL hardware to have a testlab with ESX at home, use your whitebox pc.

Great work guys and credit goes to Paul Davey who wrote it.

You can check it out here.

Automated builds of ESX made even easier!

Do you want to automate your deployment of ESX servers ? There are many ways you can do this, and there are two common ways. The first way is by using a third party deployment tool like altiris. The second and most common way of deploying ESX servers without having to go through a manual build process is by using the built in kickstart functionality. Kickstart is not really black magic, but it can be kind of confusing if you are new to it.

By far the most time consuming part of a kickstart configuration is the ks.cfg file which allows you to customise the ESX build to the maximum degree. http://www.xtravirt.com has come to the aid of the community once again and published a Windows based application for creating the ks.cfg file. Gavin Joliffe from xtravirt.com informs me that version 2 is already in the pipeline. Check it out here.
