Batch Upgrade of VMWare tools
Written by Damian Murdoch
Friday, 07 July 2006

If you have upgraded a large number of Virtual Machines from ESX 2.x to ESX 3 you may find it easier to do a batch upgrade of VMware tools than to do them individually. The batch upgrade command can be found on the VirtualCenter server in the "c:\program files\vmware\vmware virtualcenter 2.0" directory and the syntax is :

vmware-vmupgrade.exe -u <user> -p <passwd> -n "cluster-name/VM-name"

for example

vmware-vmupgrade.exe -u administrator -p password -n "mybigdatacenter/quickvm"

ESX 3.0 Upgrade Part 2
Written by Damian Murdoch

So I have completed my first ESX 3.0 upgrade even if it only a dev host! As stated in the previous article, we upgraded virtualcenter to 2.0 which went relatively smoothly and then I proceeded on to a clean install of ESX 3.0 on my dev host. Before I could do this I had to migrate the dev servers off the host to another location. This is the basic steps that the upgrade took on it's way to completion. There are some tips and tricks from this upgrade that I would like to share for the regular readers of this blog, so read on.

Well I know the exam is going to be retired and that nobody will be taking it. But there are a fair few people out there who still have to support esx 2.x farms and after looking through my study notes after the exam and course it dawned on me that this information will help people out there. You can use it to study but you should really use it to learn. Check it out, it is my summary of all the information I learnt on the course to cram for the exam. If you have any study notes you want me to add or a correction then let me know!

Virtualisation Takeup Explodes!
Written by Damian Murdoch
Tuesday, 04 July 2006

According to a recent survey by Yankee group and Sunbelt software, over three quarters of the worlds companies either are planning to virtualise or already have begun the process.

The survey also states that the main reason that companies are virtualising is reducing infrastructure costs and disaster recovery. Other reasons people are virtualising includes increasing server utilisation rates, physical space consolidation and application deployment. VMWare appears to be the clear winner with a total market share of 55 percent compared to the next competitor Microsoft with a 29 percent market share. Meanwhile Xen, the open source alternative appears to have slow takeup with only 1 percent market share.

VMWare ESX server was the leading product with just under half of all virtualisation or planned virtualisation deployments in the survey, meanwhile GSX server only had 10 percent of the total which is not surprising as VMWare now offers a free upgrade path from GSX to ESX.

Only 4 percent of respondants to the survey had no plans to install a virtualisation solution at all.
