How to create shared storage for v ESX on Wrkstn6 1 Year, 6 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi,

I have been successfully following the xtravirt white paper on installing ESX on Workstation6.

Now I want to configure VMotion and DRS between 2 ESX hosts but cannot work out how to configure virtual shared storage to enable this. Under Wrkstn6, a vmdk that is already presented to one virtual ESX host can be presented to a second host, however that second host can then not be powered on due to a lock on the vmdk by the first host.

Any suggestions or experiences on how to work around this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi John,

There is a nice doc in the xtravirt web that shows you how to simulate an ISCSI storage using Fedora (that is the one i used). It is very easy to install, configure, and attach to the ESX. It is all expained on the doc, here is the _link_:

http://www.xtravirt.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=75&func=fileinfo&id=16

I hope it helps you.

Hi Guys
i have just gone through this excercise and i personally did not like the openfiler approach there
was way too much configuration and even once it was up and running It was v unstable and hard to adminster.
Instead I DL the freenas vap dropped into workstation started it up enabled iscsi I did not bother adding any ISCSI chap authentication and job done took me about 15mins and I have not had a single issue with it.
