Yes indeed, you have the right Dave. I suspected there couldn’t be that many Neils from IBM in NZ doing VMWare….

I’m not surprised that that site has grown – when I left, the architects were looking to pretty much double the farm for the Exxx projects – so that would be enough for 200 or so VM’s? (iirc)

Have you sold them on going to VI3? My current client is pretty excited about the resource pooling and HA options available in the enterprise flavour. Thankfully we are just going to the build stage shortly – so don’t have to upgrade (which looks yukky)

Thinking about that site, and esp. for government projects, virtualisation is a boon – esp if the project doesn’t go down that well. How many times have you seen a project go in, (with super-duper hardware, because it’s really important), flop, or not be as successful as anticipated, and you are left with a bunch of high powered servers doing diddly – at least if it’s virtual, the capacity doesn’t go to waste…

Yup, they are going to be going to VI3.0 in the next month or too... again, because the upgrade is so bad, we are going to do a side by side.

As for the size.. lets just say there are 9TB of virtual disk images now...

9TB? I'm impressed.

Are they still using your manky perl _script_s for backup to jbod? or are they waiting for VI3 cons. backup to do something more sophisticated?

Do you know of anyone who is planning to do an in-place upgrade? Everyone I've talked to says "not a chance"

I get the same feeling here in OZ. Not many people are doing in place upgrades. In fact I cannot recall ever hearing of one that is doing it.

Yup, the "manky" perl _script_s are still in use.. albeit heavily modifed from what you last saw...

I dont have a single customer here that will be doing an inplace upgrade.. at least until v3.1 comes out, and the read/write VMFS2.0 support is included.

As for consolidated backup.. have you actually seen that program, and how dodgy it actually is.. I would not recommend that for production for a long time yet.

Neil, what's wrong with consolidated backup? What don't you like about it?
